Accra Tuesday October 23, 2012.
Captain Budu Koomson (Rtd), Chief Operating Officer of UT Holdings Limited is predicting doom for Ghana if the police in particular, fail to act professionally in the impending general election in December.

“If the police lose the line, we will all be thinking about being refugees next year,” he said.

Mr. Koomson who is also a board member of IMANI Ghana, a policy analysis and education think tank was speaking at forum organised by IMANI to discuss potential threats to peace and stability of the December elections.

Speaking on the topic “Ghana 2012: Are we looking into the abyss?” the UT Boss said the actions and  of politicians, technocrats and the media have contributed to the volatile situation ahead of the elections and it was up to the police and other security agencies to save the situation by displaying their neutrality.

Without mincing words he said “We have maniacs parading themselves as politicians and paying peanuts to stupid people to cause mayhem and we (civil society and people) are not making them pay for their actions.”

He described the commitment to a peaceful electoral process promised by politicians as “mere rhetoric” and  “blatant cheap talk”  and said it is only the security agencies not even the Electoral Commission that could assist to ensure peaceful, free and fair process in December and beyond.

“It seems we have accepted that the politicians will do their utmost reckless best to burn this country just to win power, but we still seem to have hope in our Police to save the situation should they show some resolve professionalism and aggressive neutrality.

“It is logical to conclude from the above scenarios that the gross inertia and ineptitude shown by the security agencies are mainly due to the concentration of power that politicians command.”

“If we will repose our last hopes in the Police, then we can only implore them to put their house in order in good time and to make adequate and timely preparations to ensure the integrity of the upcoming elections.”

Mr. Koomson wondered why ultra political groups like Azorka Boys of the ruling NDC and Bamba Boys of the NPP were allowed to function saying “For Christ’s sake why are we watching them strut around with impudence?”

He condemned the NPP’s mantra of “All die be die” and the NDC’s “Heroes/Martyrs Fund” and said both should never be encouraged.

He also blamed the media for allowing their networks to be used by politicians to cause mayhem and urged religious bodies especially churches to persist in their effort to bring peace to Ghana in spite of stiff opposition from some politicians
