Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, New Patriotic Party
(NPP) presidential candidate in the 2012 general election has counseled the
party’s supporters to take solace in the fact that “the NPP will bounce back
very soon.”
He said “everybody in Ghana today believes the NPP is
the ideal party to spearhead the development of the country and all we need to
do is to believe that we can make it in 2016.”
Nana Akufo-Addo was meeting the party’s executives
including chairpersons, secretaries and women’s organizers from the Ashanti
Region at his Nima residence in Accra yesterday.
He said the NPP has strong structures to succeed and
all that was left was for them to unite and forge ahead to reclaim power in
2016 to enable them to pursue the vision of the party for Ghana.
He commended the people of Ashanti Region for the
tremendous support they persistently give to the NPP under his candidature
saying “I owe Ashanti Region so much gratitude.”
Making a rare comment on the election petition Nana
Akufo-Addo said “in a legal battle, you either win or lose and in this case we
lost although we do not agree fully with the court.”
He said it was the National Executive Council of the
party that sanctioned the decision to go to court and once everything was over,
the party should continue to remain united to be able put up a solid
performance in the years to come.
“We have gone through a lot as a party and this
decision of the court should never discourage us. Rather, it should serve as a
challenge for us to improve on how we approach future elections.”
The group, led by NPP Regional Chairman, F.F. Anto had
called on Nana Akufo-Addo to urge him to consider running again on the ticket
of the party in 2016.
Mr. Anto said “we have come to check on you and to
ask you consider running again as our flag bearer. We know you can take us to
greater heights and we count on you to accept our proposal.”
Apart from the team from Ashanti, the Young
Executive Forum (YEF) of Ashanti Region also paid a courtesy call on Nana
Akufo-Addo where they honoured him with a plaque.
The Upper West NPP Regional Executives as well as the
Upper East Regional Friends of Nana Akufo-Addo also paid a visit.
Following the dismissal of the landmark election
petition by the Supreme Court recently, the debate about who should lead the
NPP has become intense.
Nana Akufo-Addo who together with his running mate,
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP Chairman Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, had filed
the petition, has said he is taking a break and would decide his political
future later.
However, calls on the NPP stalwart who, many
including international bodies, have hailed for the way and manner he conducted
himself during the political stalemate, continue to grow.
