The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has congratulated Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo-Addo, leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on his election victory.
The association also commended President John Dramani Mahama, all the
other presidential candidates and leaders of the various political parties for
exhibiting maturity and responsibility during the general election.
These are contained in a statement issued in Accra and jointly
signed by Benson Nutsukpui and Justin Amenuvor, National President and National
Secretary of GBA respectively.
The statement described Nana Addo, the president-elect, as “a very
senior and distinguished” member of the association and wished him well saying,
“As an association, we are proud of the fact that he is the third member of the
GBA to be elected president since the advent of the Fourth Republic.
“The GBA shares in the joy of his achievement and wishes him well as
he embarks on the arduous task of administering the affairs of our nation. We pray
that the Almighty God would guide and protect him during his term as president.”
Free & Fair
“The Bar notes the fact that the elections were free, fair,
generally orderly and peaceful and would wish to applaud the Chairperson of the
Electoral Commission, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, the Deputy Commissioners, Members
and staff of the Electoral Commission for successfully superintending the 2016
general election,” according to the GBA.
The GBA also congratulated all members of the bar who have been
elected to represent their various constituencies as Members of Parliament
saying, “The GBA is gratified by the respect for the rule of law demonstrated
by Ghanaians during the 2016 elections and hope we all would continue to be law
abiding, strive to promote peace and deepen democracy in the country.”
Amidu’s Message
In a related development, former Attorney General and Minister of
Justice, Martin A.B.K. Amidu - who is an anti-corruption crusader - had
congratulated Nana Akufo-Addo on his historic feat, saying that Nana deserves
to win against incumbent President Mahama.
“I convey my warmest congratulations to the president-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the Republic
of Ghana for his well-deserved and stunning victory over incumbent President
John Dramani Mahama in the just concluded presidential election.”
Needless Burden
“Changing a government under which the mass of ordinary people were
unnecessarily and needlessly burdened over the years under the yoke of massive
and pervasive corruption, deliberate oligarchic mismanagement of abundant
natural resources, party political and ethnic cronyism and abject ineptitude
peacefully through the ballot box is a feat worthy of emulation by other
citizens of the West African subcontinent in particular and Africa in general.”
He said, “I have no doubt that with the wise decision of the
Ghanaian people in electing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President of the
Republic of Ghana, integrity, incorruptibility, probity and accountability in
the Ghana body polity will soon be restored.”
Nana’s Track Record
According to Mr. Amidu, the track record of the president-elect and
his ‘unassailable’ commitment to democratic processes since constitutional
governance in Ghana in 1993 “gives hope that under his leadership Ghana will
once more instill the values of good and accountable governance not only in
Ghana, but will also be an advocate for those values and norms in the West
African sub-region and the continent at large.
“I whole-heartedly congratulate president-elect, Nana Addo Dankwa
Akufo-Addo for his patience, consistency to purpose, persistence and this
victory that allows him to make a very positive and beneficiary difference in
the lives of ordinary Ghanaians as President of the Republic of Ghana.”
Woyome Cash
He said that he has no doubt that Nana Addo “is aware that the
people of Ghana expect that his new government will take up the urgent responsibility
of getting back our over GH¢51.2 million back with the accruing interest looted
by the outgoing government for its lootee, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, alongside the
Waterville Holding (BVI) Ltd loot of over €47 million also with all the
accruing interest both ordered to be refunded to the Republic of Ghana by the
Supreme Court on 14th June, 2013 and 29th July, 2014 respectively.
He said, “Your victory is partly the result of the mandate and
confidence entrusted to you by the people of Ghana to get our monies back to
the Republic of Ghana in the shortest possible time,” adding, “It is my
personal prayer that upon your assumption of office on 7th January, 2017 you
will as the President of Ghana with your government, and the new Parliament of
Ghana reciprocate the trust and confidence reposed in you at these elections by
getting our Woyome and Waterville looted monies back in the shortest possible
time.”
