Accra, Friday November 2, 2012.
THE NEW Patriotic Party (NPP) has stepped up its
campaign at Amenfi in the Western region, promising to sweep up all three
parliamentary seats in the area on December 7.
The constituencies are the newly-created Amenfi
Central as well as the already existing Amenfi East and Amenfi West.
Currently the NPP controls Amenfi East seat
through former Western Regional Minister, Joseph Boahen Aidoo while the ruling
National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in control of Amenfi West with Amenfi
Central which was part of the 45 constituencies created by the Electoral
Commission, is being hotly contested between the two leading parties.
The NPP has retained Mr. Aidoo for Amenfi East and
has elected Lawyer Paul Dekyi to wrestle the seat from the NDC in the West
while Dr. Eric Wilmot, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast is battling
it out at Amenfi Central.
According to Lawyer Dekyi, the numerous
unfulfilled promises of the NDC had emboldened the electorate in Amenfiman to
clear out the ruling party in December.
He said currently the untold hardship brought about
by the NDC was so severe that the people had regretted rejecting the NPP in
2008, adding “they have assured that they would never make any electoral
mistake this time around.”
He said the NDC’s stiff opposition of the free
senior high school education being promised by Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP had
worsened the ruling party’s chances in the constituencies throughout the
region.
“Most of
these NDC leaders including President Mahama enjoyed free education brought by
Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah but when it got to their turn they say it cannot be
done. I urge the electorate to take a critical look at the NDC. They have
nothing to offer Ghana.”
Lawyer Dekyi said currently Ghana needed well
educated people to build a prosperous nation and any party that did not have
plans for education must not be entertained.
“Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP are saying that free
SHS can be done. We have time and again said that quality with the teacher and
infrastructure development and expansion would be at the centre of the policy
and we are going to pursue this.”
“The free SHS is non-negotiable and the people are
determined to back the NPP to deliver on this promise.”
He complained about the bad road network in the
area and said the NPP would make the effort to address some of the most
important issues in the region.
