The Greater Accra branch of Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Friday held delegates congress at Accra Polytechnic to elect new executives for the 2012 general elections and beyond.

It was held in a peaceful and congenial atmosphere unlike the party’s Western Regional congress which ended abruptly after three delegates were found to be having the same identity numbers.

The congress was graced by the party’s bigwigs who are gearing up for the national delegates’ congress which has suffered series of postponements and they did not waste time in lobbying the regional delegates for votes.

Ladi Nylander the current CPP Chairman, Dr. Edmund Delle, Samia Nkrumah who are all vying for the chairperson position as well as other candidates for national executive positions were all there to address the delegates.

In all, 21 contestants including four women filed their nominations for nine executive positions which were up for grabs except the 2nd Vice Chairperson position which Richard Nii Oshui Codjoe went unopposed for the region.

George Nana Boadi grabbed the position of Chairman, beating his rivals Nii Antwi-Gborblor Fleischer (75) and Nana Kwaku Dumfeh (46) while Thelma Lamptey polled 179 to defeat Bonaventure William Appiah 60 as 1st Vice Chairperson.

The position of secretary went to Paul Kwame Anaman who polled 142 votes against Jonathan Ayikwei Attoh who got 96 while Michael Kwamena Samgot 141against Simon Justice Akaboh (59) and John B. Anwomea (38) for the position of treasurer.

Koo Mensah Frempong polled 172 to defeat Francis Hamilton Nii Tettey Addo(65) for the position of Organizer while KateQuaye got 87 votes to defeat Edwina Ayorkor Okuadjo (80) and Adisah Issah (69) in a closely fought contest for Women’s Organizer.

In the Youth Organizer contestIsaac Oteng polled 132 votes to defeat Ernesto Yeboah (104)while Richard N. Nyanyo got 101 to defeat Bernard Acheampong (93) and Richard H.K. Ahamazie (43) in another closely fought contest for the position of Education Secretary.

The only constituency that could not participate in the congress was Ablekuma Central where some disgruntledparty members had succeeded in getting a court injunction to stop the delegates from voting.

Earlier, the Chairman of 2011 CPP Congress, Wing Commander Patrick Sogbodjor dispelled rumours that the CPP national executives did not want to hold the congress to select flagbearer for the 2012 general elections.

“It is not true that the CPP does not want to hold the congress. Even though we continue to postpone the date for congress, it is due to circumstances beyond our control. We are assuring that the next time we fix a date it would be honoured.”

He called for unity among the leadership and rank and file of the party saying “the more we attack each other the more we destroy our great party.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) supervised the congress with Alexander Poku-Akubea and Micheal Boadu as leaders of the EC delegation.
