Kojo Twum Boafo, a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Executive of the Free Zones Board (FZB), has mocked the demonstration embarked upon by aggrieved members of the ruling party in the Volta region last Wednesday, claiming the action will not impact negatively on the NDC’s fortunes in the 2012 general elections.
He claimed the situation is being over hyped by the media and NDC’s opponents, particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying only 13 people took part in the demonstration.
The Volta region, which the NDC’s electoral ‘bank’ was in turmoil last week following discontentment among the rank and file over the pace of development in the region leading to a demonstration against Regional Minister, Joseph Amenowode and the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Isaac Kodobisah who they claim is not pushing hard enough for the region.
Twum Boafo on Saturday on Joy FM’s news analysis programme Newsfile, which was also live on Multi TV, made nonsense of the impact the demonstration ahead of the 2012 elections, adding that few self-seeking and disgruntled people turned up for the demonstration, which was even scuttled by the police.
“Let us get serious. That right there pointing to a clip of the demonstration, may be after putting that up I shouldn’t speak again because that is not a demonstration, that is a joke,” he insisted.
“Our opponents in the NPP have made a big song and dance about the despondency in the Volta region. You see, I counted them, there were about 13 people in the frame," he said.
He said rumours of disaffection and despondency in the party’s stronghold is “an illusion if not an over exaggeration of the matter.”
Twum Boafo, noted for his fiery and intemperate language on radio, said the police did nothing wrong in arresting the demonstrators and insisted that the demonstrators failed to use the approved routes agreed with the police, hence the need to stop them.
He said the Eastern corridor road and the University of Allied Health Sciences, two major projects promised the people of Volta region, are in various stages of execution.
However, Alhaji Bello Misbaw, one of the leaders of the demonstrators told DAILY GUIDE that Twum Boafo got it wrong with his assessment of what transpired in Ho on Wednesday.
He said “it is a lie for anybody to hold that we were only 13. When the police accosted us we were about 150 and they managed to arrest 12 of us.”
