Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng was the toast of the huge audience that thronged the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra on Wednesday eve to listen to Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo’s Liberty Lecture.

The audience which included former President JA Kufuor could not hide their admiration and support for the celebrated surgeon when he entered the auditorium to partake in the lecture organized by Danquah Institute (DI), a media, research and policy analysis group under the theme “Building a society of opportunities”.

Immediately he entered the auditorium the place was electrified with claps and excitement and a standing ovation in an apparent show of appreciation for his contribution towards the development of the country.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng hit the headlines during the week when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for no apparent reason terminated his appointment as Honorary Director of the National Cardiothoracic Center, a facility he singlehandedly established at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, sparking widespread condemnation of the government.

As a result, staff at the center including doctors staged a sit down strike in solidarity with Prof. Frimpong Boateng.

At the lecture, Nana Akufo-Addo who is the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cautioned the government to check its reckless borrowing habit because “we may have to revisit our HIPC experience if we don’t borrow responsibly.”

Former President Kufuor for his part said current events in the country show that the NPP was betrayed and made a passionate appeal to the electorate to bring back the party into office to redeem Ghanaians from economic stagnation.

According to DI, the Liberty Lecture has been instituted to celebrate and recognize “the contributions of the several people and many others that led to March 6, 1957, the birth of Ghana from the Gold Coast.’
