A group calling itself Friends of Alban Bagbin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has dared the Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Bernard Mornah to ‘unseat’ their MP.

The PNC chairman has reportedly expressed interest in contesting the November parliamentary election in Nadowli-Kaleo Constituency in the Upper West Region after his previous unsuccessful attempts in Wa Central.

A statement issued and signed by Hafiz Sumaila, spokesperson for the group said “the youth in the Upper West Region, especially in Nadowli-Kaleo, are demanding that the chairman of the People’s National Convention(PNC), Mr. Bernard Mornah respects the choice of the people of Nadowli-Kaleo Hon, Alban Bagbin as their representative.”

“The electorate of the Nadowli- Kaleo have no intention whatsoever to change the hard-working Majority Leader who is probably the most experienced MP in the current democratic dispensation.”

“We are wondering why Mr. Mornaha after unsuccessful attempts at winning the Wa Central seat would now turn his attention to Nadowli-Kaleo. What is his motivation?” they queried.

“We are not against Mr. Mornah for nurturing ambitions to get to Parliament, but we are satisfied with the leadership of Hon. Bagbin and will at no point allow Mr. Mornah to win the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency.”

“We have followed with keen interest how the current MP has positioned the constituency and the Upper West region on the political map of Ghana and are privileged to have him as our MP.  The constituency has seen unprecedented development through the leadership of Hon. Bagbin and we shall give him another opportunity to enhance his record and sustain the development agenda of the government in the constituency and region.”

The group said the Majority Leader had “distinguished himself as a unifier, conciliator and is highly respected by both the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament, which is an honour to the region,” adding “he has dutifully served not only the people of the Upper West region but also the nation as the leader of government business in the House.”

The group further said “it therefore makes no sense for the constituency to substitute one of the most prominent politicians to have come from the Upper West Region after the late Dr. Hilla Limann for an over ambitious young man.”

“For Mr. Bernard Mornah to state that Hon. Bagbin has outlived his usefulness in the area is an attempt to discredit the experienced legislator.

“We wish to advise him to learn from the experience of mature democracies in the world about the value of experienced MPs for the country and constituency.”

“If it is an attempt to malign and dishonour the Majority leader, it will be an exercise in futility, as the youth of Upper West will not risk the future of the people in the hands of a wavering politician.”

According to the youth, Nadowli-Kaleo has gained prominence due to the leadership of Mr. Bagbin, saying “the empowerment of the youth, including Mr. Mornah which the majority leader has championed in not only Nadowli-Kaleo constituency but the Upper West region in general is unprecedented.”

“The commendable leadership of Hon. Alban Bagbin as Majority Leader is a great pride to the region, and it will be unthinkable for the people of the constituency to unseat him for any untested and opportunistic politician. We still stand solidly behind Hon. Bagbin and will elect him again to Parliament,” the group stated.
