Renowned Information Technology
(IT) giant Nokia has organized the ‘Mobile World Congress’ Roadshow to display
its latest innovations to telecom operators, government and private businesses
as part of efforts to bridge the technology gap between the rich and the poor.
Nokia said it would help in the development
of countries like Ghana through ‘Internet of Things (loT),’ as well as other
critical communications network for public safety while ensuring a world-class mobile
broadband customer experience for subscribers at the same time.
At the roadshow in Accra
yesterday, Nokia, apart from the loT, was able to display innovative projects
like Small Cells, which it said increases network capacity, FastMile which allows
the telecoms to use LTE radio technology, IP Backhaul which ensures flexibility
to deliver best customer experience, SDN which has capabilities for clouds, CEM
to maneuver complex network environment, as well as Transport which creates
high-speed network.
Deputy Minister of
Communications, Ato Sarpong who opened the roadshow, also used the occasion to
celebrate Nokia’s 151 anniversary as a company.
The minister reiterated the
government’s commitment to the creation of an enabling environment for
businesses to thrive.
He said the government was aware
that there can never be accelerated development without making technology the
mainstay of the process, saying “the way to go for us is to embrace technology
and use it as part of our lives.”
The national fibre optics
initiative is being pursued and the eastern corridor projects have been
completed and we are looking for funds to start the western section for the
country to get the “entire loop,” he added.
The Ambassador of Finland to both
Ghana and Nigeria Ms. Pirjo Soumela-Chowdhury, said Ghana has a great
investment potential and many Finnish businesses were exploring the
opportunities available.
She said Nokia has become a big
part of the Finnish and global success story, adding that the company was continuously
exploring ways to make life better.
Ramy Hashem, Country Senior
Officer for Nokia in Ghana, said they were determined to show the telecom
sector how to meet the ever-increasing demand for network capacity, speed and coverage
and improve the customer experience with high-quality and secure networks.
“Ghana is an important market for
Nokia. This is the first innovation roadshow Nokia brings to Ghana for the
country’s socio-economic benefits. We see this as an opportunity for the Ghana
ICT market to benefit from our state-of-the-art technologies and concepts to transform
telecoms networks to be more dynamic, agile and evolving.”
He said the series of technology
roadshows in Africa had been designed according to the different market needs to
meet the growing demand for data intensive applications and prepare for the
next wave of network development, including cloud, loT and ultra broadband
networks.
